Anatomical Study of the Maxillary Sunus in Korean Infants

Abstract
The author carried out measurements of eleven items concerning the maxillary sinus using 143 cadavers of Korean infants and then analyzed the growing state of the sinus. In addition the author observed without measuring five items concerning to the maxillary sinus using the same materials for comparative purposes.
The results obtained were as follows:
1) The growth of all parts of the maxillary sinus showed an ascending concave curve except for the following. The height of maxillary sinus showed an ascending convex curve in the male, the anterior bony wall of the maxillary sinus showed a descending concave curve in the male and the anterior bony wall of the maxillary sinus showed a descending convex curve in the female.
2) The ratio of growth quantity in each part ranged generally from 1.08 to 1.98. It was greatest in the capacity of the maxillary sinus while it was the least in the thickness of the anterior bony wall of the maxillary sinus in the male and the female.
3) The growth rate and specific growth rate generaly increased by linear relationship with the age in months. On the otherhand, it showed a decreasing relationship in the height of the maxillary sinus in the male and a decreasing relationship in the thickness of the anterior bony wall of the maxillary sinus in the female.
4) When comparing the level of the floor of the maxillary sinus and the level of the floor of the nasal cavity, the maxillary sinus floor was higher in 248 sides(87.9%), the same level was found in 32 sides(11.3%) and the maxillary sinus floor was lower than the nasal cavity floor in only 2.
5) The deepest point of the canine fossa lay at the level of the upper 1/3 between the infraorbital margin and the superior alveolar margin in 223 sides(78.0%) and at the level of middle 1/3 in all others.
6) The shape of the maxillary hiatus was elliptical in 120 sides(42. 1%), oval in 45 sides(15.8%) and round in 42 sidzs(14.7%). Other shapes observed included triangular, semicircular, crescent and slender squre forms.
7) The paraostia of the maxillary sinus was observed in 4 cases(2.8%) and double maxillary sinus was observed in 1 race.
